Geef – Pros & Cons
About Geef
What it is
Geef.nl is a Dutch donation site that has handled online gifts since 2004. It is run by a private company, Geef B.V. (registered in 2021), with donor money held by a separate foundation. People give to more than 5,000 Dutch charities or to personal fundraising campaigns, such as birthdays, sporting challenges and memorial funds. Donors get nothing back: the terms say a donation is irrevocable and carries no reward. The only possible benefit is a Dutch income-tax deduction when the charity has ANBI status.
How it works
You choose a charity or a campaign and give from €5 by iDEAL, card or PayPal; charities can also take monthly direct debits. Every donation is paid out even if the campaign's target is not reached, so there is no all-or-nothing option. Donations are collected through the payment provider Curo Payments into an account of a separate foundation, Stichting Derdengelden GeefGratis, and paid to the recipient's own bank account once a month, normally in the first days of the next month. Money from a campaign run for a charity always goes to the charity, not to the campaigner. Personal campaigns pay out to the person's bank account after a check that the account name matches.
Who can raise money
Any Dutch foundation or association with notarised statutes can list as a charity, and any registered user can start a campaign for a charity, for themselves or for someone else. Campaigns are not checked in advance; complaints are investigated. Instead of vetting, the site labels each recipient on a four-level scale, from charities with both ANBI status and CBF recognition down to private individuals, where only the bank-account name is checked. Geef.nl itself advises giving to personal campaigns only when you know the fundraiser.
Fees
Charities and campaigners pay no subscription or platform fee. The donor carries the cost at checkout and chooses between:
- a transaction fee of 2.5% plus €0.89, which is taken from the donation if you do not add it on top; or
- a voluntary contribution to the platform instead.
In December 2024 the Dutch consumer authority ACM named Geef.nl among seven donation platforms that had to state their costs more clearly.
What reaches the project
Geef.nl says that on average 98.5% of each donation reaches the cause, a figure measured in January 2021 and not updated since. Its own worked example shows €974.11 of a €1,000 donation reaching the recipient when the transaction fee is taken from the gift. If you add a voluntary contribution on top, that money goes to the platform, not the cause.
Track record
The homepage showed, on 30 October 2026, more than €35.1 million raised, more than 16,400 campaigns, more than 43,000 givers and more than 5,000 charities. The site claims "more than 25 years" of giving, while its other pages date the start to 2004. No annual overview has been published since 2020. Its public review score was 2.2 out of 5 from 9 reviews in August 2026, mostly about costs and slow support.
Status and regulation
Operating as of 30 October 2026. Geef.nl holds no investment licence and needs none: donation platforms are outside the Dutch financial regulator AFM's crowdfunding supervision and outside the EU crowdfunding rules. Dutch consumer law, enforced by the ACM, applies. Donor money is kept apart from the operating company in Stichting Derdengelden GeefGratis, meant to protect donations if Geef B.V. fails. Payments run through Curo Payments, Slimpay for direct debits and PayPal. Geef.nl did not hold the charity watchdog CBF's recognition for donation platforms in August 2026. No compensation scheme covers donors.
Our view
We do not rate Geef.nl for return or risk. A donation here is a gift: nothing comes back except a possible tax deduction for gifts to ANBI charities. For a donor, two facts matter. Check the cost choice at checkout, because the fee or voluntary contribution is added there. And gifts to personal campaigns are checked only by bank-account name and are never tax-deductible.
Regulation
License / Regulation: No investment licence — donation platforms are outside AFM crowdfunding supervision and the EU crowdfunding rules; Dutch consumer law applies, enforced by the ACM, which required clearer cost disclosure in December 2024. Payments run through Curo Payments, Slimpay and PayPal. No compensation scheme covers donors.

Useful Information
A donation is irrevocable and is paid out even if the target is not reached. Donor money is held by a separate foundation until payout, to protect it if the operating company fails. For personal campaigns, Geef.nl only checks the bank-account name and cannot verify that the money is spent as promised.
At checkout you choose between a transaction fee of 2.5% plus €0.89, taken from the gift if you do not add it, or a voluntary contribution to the platform. Charities and campaigners pay no platform fee.
Geef.nl says 98.5% on average, a figure from January 2021. Its own example shows €974.11 of a €1,000 gift reaching the recipient when the fee is taken from the donation. A voluntary contribution you add goes to the platform.
Keep what you raise: every donation is paid out, even if the campaign target is never reached.

No. A donation is a gift with no reward. Gifts to charities with ANBI status may be deducted from Dutch income tax; gifts to personal campaigns never are. Geef.nl issues no receipts: your bank statement is the proof.
Donations are added up per recipient and paid out once a month, usually in the first days of the next month and at the latest 45 days under the terms.
