Produzioni dal Basso – Pros & Cons

PROS
Online since 2005, the oldest crowdfunding site in Italy: €33.9 million raised for 11,130 projects (October 2026).
Banks, foundations and city councils run match-funding calls that add their own money to selected campaigns.
Backers pay no fees, and all-or-nothing pledges are only a card pre-authorisation that is never charged if the goal is missed.
Money is held by Lemonway, a payment institution authorised in France, or PayPal, not by the platform.
CONS
In keep-what-you-raise and simple-donation campaigns your money goes to the project at once, even if it misses its goal.
No project vetting: the platform says it applies no entry filter and does not evaluate projects.
"Funded" counts any project that received money; no rate of reaching the goal and no delivery figures are published.
If a reward never arrives the platform takes no responsibility; the claim is against the project owner.

About Produzioni dal Basso

What it is

Produzioni dal Basso is Italy's oldest crowdfunding site, online since 2005 and run since 2013 by FolkFunding S.r.l. Benefit, a small Milan company. People donate to, or pre-buy a reward from, cultural, social and civic projects: films, books, festivals, community and charity campaigns. Backers get at most a thank-you or a product. Nobody earns interest, gets shares or gets money back. A special feature is match funding: banks, foundations, companies and city councils add money to selected campaigns that reach a threshold.

How it works

Each campaign uses one of three formats, and it decides what happens to your money:

  • Tutto o niente (all or nothing): your card or PayPal is only pre-authorised. You are charged the day after the deadline if the goal is met; if not, nothing is charged. Runs up to 120 days.
  • Raccogli tutto (keep what you raise): you are charged at once and the project keeps the money even if it misses its goal. Must offer at least one reward. Runs up to 365 days.
  • Donazione semplice (simple donation): a plain gift, charged at once, with no target and no reward. Runs up to 365 days.

Backers who have not verified their identity can give up to €1,000 a day and less than €2,500 a year across all projects.

Who can raise money

Anyone who registers and passes the payment institution's identity checks: individuals, associations, social co-operatives, companies and public bodies. The platform says it applies no entry filter and does not evaluate projects; it steps in only if a project breaks its terms. Projects in sponsored match-funding calls are selected by the sponsor.

Fees

Backers pay nothing to the platform (your bank may charge for a bank transfer). Project owners pay per donation (as published in October 2026):

  • platform commission: 3% on simple donations, 5% on keep-what-you-raise and all-or-nothing campaigns (all-or-nothing only if the goal is met);
  • payment costs: 1.6% + €0.35 per donation by card or bank transfer through Lemonway (euro area), or 3.4% + €0.35 through PayPal.

Withdrawing the money to the project's bank account is free.

What reaches the project

On a €100 card donation to a reward campaign, the project pays 5% + 1.6% + €0.35 = €6.95, so about €93 reaches it. On a €100 simple donation, about €95 reaches it. Through PayPal, about €91 and €93.

Track record

The homepage showed, on 30 October 2026, €33.9 million raised since 2005, 11,130 funded projects, 535,792 registered users and 565 live campaigns. "Funded" here means a project received some money, not that it reached its goal, because two of the three formats keep everything from the first euro. No rate of campaigns reaching their goal and no figures on delivered rewards are published. The operating company had 7 employees and revenue of €805,908 with a small profit in 2025.

Status and regulation

Operating normally as of 30 October 2026. FolkFunding S.r.l. Benefit holds no investment licence and needs none: donation and reward crowdfunding is outside the EU crowdfunding rules and is not supervised by Italy's market regulator Consob or the Bank of Italy. "Benefit company" is an ordinary for-profit company with a stated social purpose, not a charity or a supervised firm. Money is collected and held by Lemonway, a payment institution authorised in France by the ACPR, for which FolkFunding acts as payment agent, and by PayPal. No compensation scheme covers backers.

Our view

We do not rate Produzioni dal Basso for return or risk. Backing a project here is giving or pre-buying a reward, not investing: there is no interest and no repayment. The most important thing for a backer is the campaign format: only all-or-nothing campaigns charge you nothing if the goal is missed. Projects are not vetted, and the platform takes no responsibility if a reward never arrives.

Regulation

License / Regulation: No investment licence — donation and reward crowdfunding is outside the EU crowdfunding rules and outside Consob and Bank of Italy supervision. FolkFunding S.r.l. Benefit acts as payment agent of Lemonway, a payment institution authorised by the French ACPR (REGAFI no. 72477); PayPal is also used. No compensation scheme covers backers.

  • Useful Information

Is my money protected if a project fails?

Only in all-or-nothing campaigns, where nothing is charged if the goal is missed. In keep-what-you-raise and simple-donation campaigns the money goes to the project at once, goal or no goal. The platform takes no responsibility for undelivered rewards; your claim is against the project owner, and a card chargeback is the practical fallback.

What does it cost to back a project?

Nothing on the platform side. All fees are paid by the project owner. Your bank may charge for a bank transfer.

What share of my money reaches the project?

    About €93 of a €100 card donation to a reward campaign (5% commission + 1.6% + €0.35 payment cost) and about €95 of a €100 simple donation (3% + 1.6% + €0.35). Through PayPal the payment cost is 3.4% + €0.35.

    Is it all-or-nothing or keep-what-you-raise?

Both, plus simple donations. Check the format before you give: all-or-nothing only pre-authorises your card and charges it if the goal is met; keep-what-you-raise and simple donations charge you at once.

    Who can start a project?

Anyone who registers and passes identity checks with the payment institution. The platform applies no entry filter and does not evaluate projects, except in sponsored match-funding calls where the sponsor selects them.

    Do I get any return?

No. You get at most a thank-you, a product or an experience. Donations may be tax-deductible only if the beneficiary is a registered non-profit that issues a valid receipt; the platform's confirmation email has no tax value.

    What is match funding?

Banks, foundations, companies and city councils run calls on the platform and add their own money to selected campaigns that reach a threshold, sometimes half or more of the budget. The sponsor selects the projects.
